Isle Royale (almost)

Where the heck is Isle Royale? And for that matter – where’s Minocqua, Wisconsin?

After crossing the Mackinac Bridge I stayed overnight at a Rest Area in the U.P.
Greta liked where we parked for the night
The next morning I started driving towards Houghton, Michigan – If you’ve never been to this Junk Yard Art Display – it’s well worth a trip!

About mid-morning – Greta got hungry
I heard about a new Disc Golf Course up by Houghton, MI named Bucky’s. It was tricky finding it. There wasn’t any signage and only a small pull-off to make in. A path was the only indication of something more.
The course is literally in a forest
Even though it’s super new – they have excellent signage to find the next hole!
I camped at F.J. McLain State Park – very uneven camping site but right along Lake Superior
Got up early to drive up to Copper Harbor to catch the Ferry
The Ferry didn’t sail because Lake Superior was crazy rough with 10ft waves
For safety concerns the captain canceled that day’s trip to Isle Royal – I went to the Ferry Office to get a refund 🙁

In the town of Copper Harbor is the very beginning of Highway 41 which goes all the way down to Miami, Florida. Just in case you didn’t know – Lake Shore Drive in Chicago is Hwy 41
After the ferry ride was canceled I started south towards Wisconsin and saw this snow gauge that they have in the U.P.
Here’s my campsite at Clear Lake campground outside of Minocqua, Wisconsin
The Bearskin Trail begins in Minocqua, Wisconsin and travels South for about 22 miles – very popular with biycleists and snowmobilers

The rumors are true.
I’m sad to report that Paul Bunyan’s in Minocqua Wisconsin is closed.
From what I read online, they closed during Covid and have never reopened. 
Local Treasure Lost
Had to stop at the Windmill Ice Cream Shop – but it was already closed for the season
I tried to go Disc Golfing at a really highly rated course outside of Minocqua – it was a really well kept course – but the mosquitoes were terrible and I quit after 6 holes
